Actually it means the territory on the south of the lower reach of Yangtze River including Zhejiang,Hunan,Jiangxi,southern parts of Anhui,Jiangsu and Hubei provinces.It is the principal district of China tea. Annual production reaches two-thirds of the entire tea produced in China-in green tea,black tea,dark green tea scented tea and several famous tea given special fancy names such as xihu Lungching(West Lake Dragon Well),Huangshan Maofeng(Peak Mao of Yellow Mountain ).Dongting Biluo(Green wistaria of the Dongting Lake in Hunan Province).Junshan Yinzhen(Silver needle of Mount Jun)and Lushan Yunwu(Cloud and Mist over Mount Lu)and others.

In this district,tea plantations are mainly located on the hilly lands,a small number is on higher altitude,There the four seasons are clearly distinguishable,Annual temperature is 15-18C.

In winter,temperature generally is -8C,Precipitation is 1400-1600mm,60%to80%of which is concentrated in spring and summer,Autumn is dry.The soil is mainly red with a part of yellow and brownish-yellow.A minor part is alluvial soil.
